I grew up reading a lot of Gary Larson’s “The Far Side” – what I liked most about his comic strip was his subtle, sarcastic sense of humor that was communicated through inference. Instead of spelling things out for the reader, he’d imply humor through uncomfortable or unrealistic situations that one would never dream of getting into:
To me, Nicholas Gurewitch’s comic strip “Perry Bible Fellowship” is a natural progression from Larson’s – it’s a shame that it came to a (hopefully temporary) end in February of this year. I’d say that it definitely oversteps more boundaries than “The Far Side” (in Larson’s defense, he received tons of protest letters of how vile and disgusting his comics were so he was pretty progressive for his time. This book is a fascinating read as it goes over not only his creative process and background, but also the controversial nature of his comics to people across the nation).
