Grand Street Fire.

Shortly after midnight on April 12th, a 7-alarm fire ripped through a tenement building on the corner of Grand and Eldridge in Chinatown/LES. More than 250 firefighters were on hand to battle the blaze – at last count, the fire killed one, injured 30 and rendered over 200 residents homeless.

I was on my way to pick up lunch this afternoon when I came across the aftermath of the largest city fire in years – though it was two days later, the acrid stench of ash and charred wood hung heavily in the air. The block was fenced off as police officers and emergency workers evacuated buildings nearby. It seems as though the buildings, which have garnered numerous housing violations over the years, will be demolished soon.

  2. Thanks for the comments, Damien. And yes, I’ll be following this closely… the fire happened right in our backyard and I am hoping that the city takes care of the victims somehow.

  4. One thing I’ve been thinking about is how so many immigrant families distrust banks and end up stashing their life savings in cash within their apartments. I’m sure that quite a few families lost everything they had in that fire… heartbreaking indeed.
