Sinn U1.

I’m not as big a fan of divers as I am of aviator watches, as I prefer cleaner faces… that being said, the Sinn U1 is starting to really grow on me. Technologically, this watch boasts the kinds of innovations that Sinn is known for. Firstly, the entire case and bezel are made from submarine steel (hence, the U designation from German U-Boats), which makes the watch extremely resistant to salt water and magnetic fields. The U1 is also water resistant to 1,000 meters – the lab that was contracted to tested the watch also tests actual submarines for their depth limits. In short, this is not a “pretty” watch; it’s a workhorse that’s made to withstand extreme environments. Whether you choose to put the U1′s durability to the test is totally up to you. It’s just nice to know that your watch is capable of taking a beating.

  1. I’m a fan as I’ve been a rockin’ my Bell & Ross Type Marine now for several months and can appreciate the similar aesthetic. This one’s very nice as well. Where did you find it? I’ve been really wrestling with replacing my rubber strap and I’m pretty close to picking up a NATO type of some sort. The issue is finding one that goes with most of my wardrobe.

  2. I didn’t actually buy this watch – I only own one timepiece, which is a Sinn 656s. The only authorized dealer through whom you can buy Sinn watches in the US is WatchBuys… the link in my post goes to their site.

While we’re on the topic, did you know that Sinn was the original manufacturer for Bell & Ross? If you look on eBay you’ll occasionally find B&R’s early models that are actually labeled “Bell & Ross by Sinn.” That’s why there are so many design similarities in some of the models.

  3. The Sinn U series is a great dive watch. Unlike the latest iterations of the Submariner and Planet Ocean, the U1 is really easy to read underwater. The antireflective coating on the face is amazing. I just wish the prices would come down a bit. The distribution channel is pretty rigid.

NB – There was an article about the genesis of B&R in a recent issue of Watch Time. Bruno Belamich, the Bell in Bell and Ross, was an intern at Sinn. Sinn agreed to make the initial watches, thinking that the company would soon fail.

  4. U1′s are tanks I love em but its way too big for my wrist.

Speaking of the professional line, I own the Type Demineur, definitely can see alot of the Sinn influences.

Surprised the Demineur/Marine dont get more love especially considering the Sinn connection..
